The tax covers the calendar year and is paid before the roadworthiness test. People with locomotor disabilities are exempt.
How road tax is calculated
The rate depends on engine displacement and applies to the whole displacement, not in slices. So the tax jumps at each threshold: a 2000 cm³ car pays 1,200 lei, a 2001 cm³ car already 1,800.90 lei.
Since 1 January 2026 electric cars pay the tax too — based on the gross vehicle weight in the registration papers.
The tax covers the calendar year and must be paid before the roadworthiness test: the station checks payment in the system, so pay in advance. You can pay via MPay (you need the VIN and the payer's IDNP), at a bank, through Paynet or at Poșta Moldovei.

FAQ
How much is road tax on a BMW?+
It depends on engine size. A 2.0 BMW (1998 cm³) pays 1,198.80 lei a year, a 3.0 straight-six (2998 cm³) 2,698.20 lei, a 4.4 V8 (4395 cm³) 6,592.50 lei.
Why does a 2001 cm³ engine pay so much more than a 2000 cm³ one?+
The rate applies to the whole displacement. Up to 2000 cm³ inclusive it's 0.60 lei per cm³ (1,200 lei); from 2001 cm³ it's 0.90 lei for every cm³ (1,800.90 lei).
When is road tax paid?+
Before the annual roadworthiness test: the tax covers the whole calendar year, 1 January to 31 December. The test station checks payment electronically, so pay in advance.
Do electric cars pay road tax?+
Yes, since 1 January 2026. For them the tax is based on gross weight: up to 1500 kg — 0.60 lei per kg, 1501–2500 kg — 0.90 lei, 2501–3500 kg — 1.20 lei, and so on.
